Location : Ba’kelalan, Limbang Division, Sarawak, Malaysia.
Ba’kelalan is a group of nine villages at Maligan Highlands of Limbang Division, Sarawak about 3,000 feet (910 m) above sea level and 4 km from the border with Indonesian Kalimantan and 150 km from the nearest town of Lawas. The villages are Buduk Nur, Long Langai, Long Lemumut, Long Ritan, Long Rusu, Pa Tawing, Buduk Bui, Buduk Aru and Long Rangat. The villagers here belong to the Lun Bawang tribe. The name Ba’Kelalan is derived from the Kelalan River and Ba’ which means wet lands in the Lun Bawang language. (Wiki)
A 35 mins flight journey to Bakelalan from Lawas airport. The wet barren fields and majestic mountains in the horizon welcomed us as we approached the landing strip in the Twin Otter plane.

The captain and his copilot had kindly drawn back the curtain to allow us to have a good view through the cockpit window. Having the front row seats was a good idea this time. Well before the touchdown we had a good time watching Bakelalan from the air.

A peaceful and serene sight to behold of this little village in the highlands of Mount Murud. But in the back of my mind, what would we do to pass the four days here before we could take the once a week flight to Bario. We soon found out after talking to our homestay owner Mr Matius.

Upon arrival at the airport terminal, it was unfortunate that a male villager had to be carried on a stretcher for boarding. Apparently, he had just collapsed from a stroke. Some passengers had to give up their seats to allow the stroke victim to fly to the Lawas hospital.

Mr. Matius was there at the airport to pick us up. At some point I had to bring up the subject of activities that could help us pass the time here. It would have been easier to kill time if we had planned to conquer Mount Murud but we did not come prepared for that or as interested as those who mostly come to Bakelalan for. But on hind sight those worries were all taken care of somehow. Find out how. Next…..more of Bakelalan
