Location : Dusun Gaya Baru, Desa Parit Baru, Kecamatan Selakau, Kabupaten Sambas, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia.
Two nights in Jawai and it was time to leave on our own.
Before we took the ferry we thought we should take a look at Tugu Ketupat Berdarah, Desa Parit Setia, Jawai Selatan, a concrete structure not more than 2.5m tall in the middle of a T-junction.
We had coffee at a Malay coffeeshop and had a chat with an old man who was probably the boss. He recalled that fateful day 20 years ago when 3 local Malays were murdered by Java migrants from the island of Madura. A battle ensued and the Maduras were chased out of their villages and not allowed to return.
It was a spill over from similar conflicts with the Dayaks in Bengkayang. Another racial blemish in Borneo’s history caused by the Madura immigrants. Finished our coffees and thanked the story teller as we continued our drive to Tebas Kuala Ferry Port.
Before reaching Selakau to meet our friend Desy, we made brief stops at Sebangkau and Pemangkat to take a look at the Guan Yin temple and a grand mosque.

Desy took us for a stroll through this coconut plantation and fishing village. It reminded me of Beliong or Asajaya fifty years ago. Canals were made to transport coconuts to the copra processing huts. Nostalgic. Something peculiar that we noticed here.
On the side of every house were placed large concrete containers that looked like jars. Desy said they were collecting rain water as there were no government provided piped water. Tough life. Pak Jokowi, please kindly look into this TQ.
