Location : Borneo Wood Furniture, Kecamatan Singkawang Selatan, Singkawang, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia.
The signage Borneo Wood Furniture might have been very ordinary and simple but the visit to this showroom left us bewildered thanks to Pak Norman for arranging this special tour of Singkawang.
The wooden hardscapes lining both sides of the driveway leading to the showroom could mesmerize any sculptor. Upon entering the showroom, we feasted our eyes in awe at the displays. Never had we anticipated such a high level of creativity and craftsmanship. We had compiled most of the photos into slides and may be view in our youtube video enclosed.
All the items are ‘regrettably’ for sale and once sold they will be ‘gone’. If I have my way, I would rather this outlet be turned into a ‘Belian Wood Museum’ and conserved as a tourism product to showcase the talents of wood sculpturing in Borneo. Gate collections and other side incomes would be the more sensible way to preserve the heritage of these ‘iron wood of Borneo’, some of which could be centuries old. Imagine, if rich foreigners were to buy and stash them somewhere in their homes in Europe, these legacies of the land will be gone from Borneo forever. Much have been lost already like the beads, jars and silver ornaments of Sarawak. Food for thought Singkawang. Preserve while you still can for the sake of the future generations.
