Location : Stadion Kridasana, Kelurahan Pasiran, Kecamatan Singkawang Barat, Kota Singkawang, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia.
We were so lucky that there was no rain when we visited the Stadion Kridasana the venue of the Chinese New Year or Tahun Baru Imlek celebration as the the Indonesians call it. It was always wet and drizzling when we visited it the past couple of years.
We arrived as the sun was setting after a very fruitful day of touring Singkawang with our local friend Norman and the weather was perfect. Good to see all the races coming together especially the kids having fun at the playground section. Malays kids were performing traditional dances on the big stage with 2 golden giant lion statues guarding it.

The crowd was mostly found taking photos at the mock ‘Tulou’ 土楼, a very unique circular residential structure invented by the Hakka people in olden day China to protect themselves from enemies and earthquakes. Kudos to the Singkawang team for putting up such a nice setup.

It keeps getting better each year we visit. Nowhere else in Borneo will you see the lunar new year celebration celebrated at this level and the ‘Cap Go Meh’ street parade must be attended at least once in your lifetime.

So guys, make a date with Singkawang. The drive to Singkawang through Biawak in Lundu and Sambas is very much shorter now, under 5 hours. Road condition is good. (Click here on our Trans Kalimantan drive post) Do include snorkeling in Lemukutan island as well when you do visit. Next…..Pasar Turi Singkawang
