Location : Kota Tarakan, Kalimantan Utara, Indonesia.
The Tidung, Tidong are a native group originating from northeastern part of Borneo and surrounding small islands. They live on both sides of the border of Malaysia and Indonesia. Like other tribes, this Tidung tribe has its own traditional culture and cultural house. Rumah Baloy Mayo or Baloy House is a traditional house with architectural art culture from the Tidung tribe, North Kalimantan and now has became part of Tarakan’s cultural heritage for generations.
Next in the program was the visit to the Tidung Dayak Cultural Centre. The Tidung Dayaks are mostly found in the North West corner of Kalimantan, along the coastal region of Nunukan as well as a handful in Sabah, especially Tawau. They have mostly converted to Islam. However, the dragon motifs are still retained in the design of their traditional dress as well as in their architecture. It is always interesting to note the subtle variations of motifs among the different Dayaks in Borneo.
A buffet lunch and a 30min traditional dance were thrown in with this visit. We ended the visit shopping for souvenirs at the Centre’s gift shop.
Next…..Iraw Tengkayu festival
