Location : Kota Sintang, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia.
After Sekadau, we drove eastward to Sintang about 72km away, continuing our good run of the Gawai celebrations.
We missed the street parade which happened the day before. We toured the venue at Stadion Baning, visiting many of the booths put up for the souvenir sellers as well as those from the individual districts promoting either their crafts, food or tourism products.
The night session was filled with dance performances which were impressive with lively tempos unlike the boring ‘static traditional’ ones in Sabah and Sarawak. Choreographers in Kalimantan have the guts to step out of the shadows of antiquated attires and dance routines.
So called cultural dances must evolve in order to be able to attract the younger generation. We have witnessed ever so often in Kalimantan that choreographers are so competitive that they have no issue with keeping their culture dynamic. Sarawak and especially Sabah dancers could learn a lot from their Borneo neighbours here. Next…..In and around Sintang town.
