Location : Kampung Gumbang, Bau District, Kuching Division, Sarawak, Malaysia.
Nyebang Gumbang 2018 was made more special as compared to past years’ events due to the coinciding of the opening of its brand new baruk. Situated about a kilometer along the main road leading into the village, this new baruk was made possible thanks to the donation of the land by Cikgu Atar Monok and the financial assistance totaling RM500,000 from the federal ministry(BN!) of tourism.
The reciprocal Indonesian village this time round was Anep from the sub district of Sungkung, 150 strong including officials from Bengkayang. The crowd was the biggest ever to witness this event, perhaps drawn by their curiosity of the Indonesian visitors especially their 7 copper ring ladies. A very rare and privileged opportunity indeed.

On hand to receive the Indonesian visitors was the Gumbang’s headman Mr Atok Derop. The first guy to appear from the jungle was spotted around 8pm long delayed by heavy downpour on their way from the halfway village of Kapot. Refer to our map to have a better idea of how they traveled to get here.

The traditional rituals were still performed at the old baruk and continued to be done so in the future which was a good thing because the old baruk will still be maintained.

After the animal sacrifices were done with, the crowd proceeded on foot to the new baruk and hall. Next…..Part 2 At the new Baruk.
