The African spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata), also called the sulcata tortoise, is a species of tortoise inhabiting the southern edge of the Sahara desert in Africa. It is the third-largest species of tortoise in the world.
Through our friend Albert Sim, we got to know Mr Kho who Albert bought a number of baby tortoises for his new found hobby during the Covid lockdown period. Albert aroused much curiosity and interest in us concerning Kho’s two giant Sulcata tortoises which have been paid for by a resort owner but yet to be delivered. Albert managed to call Kho to make arrangement for our visit at Kho’s home so we could see the tortoises before the handover.

Male has a concave plastron / belly
Female has a flat belly

We discovered Kho had a lot more to offer than just tortoises. Among them, snakes, lizards, rabbits, guinea pigs, frogs and squirrels.

He even had a shop at Jalan Sekama to sell all sorts of colourful and beautiful pets, most of which we had never seen before.
Concerned about the legitimacy of this trade, we asked if he had the license and he answered in the positive and even showed us the permit issued by Sarawak Forestry Corporation. So rest assured all is legal. We planned to uncover more of his beauties from his pet shop. Stay tuned for more videos if you love these cute and beautiful critters. Next………Radiated tortoise.
