Location : Dusun Medeng, Desa Sungkung II, Kecamatan Siding, Kabupaten Bengkayang, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia.
We had looked towards this Nyobeng celebration with much enthusiasm from as far back as a year ago when the Sungkung Anep folks visited Gumbang for the first leg of this joint celebration. We also knew that the journey to Anep at Sungkung II would be very challenging.
There were 2 options to get to Sungkung Medeng / Anep from Kuching, either through Serikin/Jagoi or Tebedu/Entikong. The Gumbang congregation opted for the first while we the second. We drove through the Entikong CIQ and spent the night at Entuai with our host Pak Anton who happened to be celebrating his youngest daughter’s ‘Bayar Niat’ thanksgiving after a successful healing performed by a local shaman.
We had a local friend Jais to organise 2 ojeks for the Sungkung assault. Jais whose wife was from Sungkung Anep tagged along with their baby strapped in a sarong. The ride was tough although the scenery was awesome.
First half of the trail had many patches of muddy pools and when the ascent was too steep we had to alight and walk. Even where the trail was dry the ojeks had to have the skills to maneuver in deep trenches.

Not only does one need a skillful driver but a good and powerful bike as well. If you are over 80kg and a 6 footer hard times await you unless you could get a scrambler bike to bring you. Motorbikes should at least be 150cc with strong rear shock absorbers and good brakes. Pick your ojeks wisely or you will suffer the ride. I had to dismount so many times until a point I got quite pissed with the lack of power in his motorbike.

Anyway, we had a late lunch break at Senoleng, took a power nap too and continued passing Batu Ampar and Kadok.

Noticed Akit at Mount Sinjang from a distance. We arrived passed 3pm and made ourselves at home in Agus’ empty house.
