Location : Bakun Dam, Belaga, Kapit Division, Sarawak, Malaysia.
This was one unforgettable trip into the interior of Sarawak for fish and not just any fresh water fish but the most expensive in Sarawak and perhaps Malaysia too. This king of all fishes is none other than the ‘Empurau’ fish.
For the sake of an old friend Ms Siaw Ling who requested me to organize a trip for her family of 3, we made the much dreaded 14 hour drive from Kuching to Bakun Resettlement Site to pass the night before continuing the following day. Poor Ester our host’s daughter had to stay up late so we could have supper upon arrival. We had breakfast the next day at BRS town centre and even found time to shop for native souvenirs at the only craft shop there.
We continued our journey towards Bakun dam (Click here for our post on Bakum Dam Market) and after an hour we were greeted with a huge spray coming from the spillway. Such luck!.
The monsoon rain had brought the water to a level that required some release. It was a sight to behold indeed. The thundering sound added more excitement to this rare occasion although our cameras got quite wet.
We registered at the security, parked our car and head for the dam’s jetty looking for Mr Luhat the owner of the lodge we were supposed to put up for our second night.
The 20min or so ride in his speed boat brought us to a tiny little island chalet.
Checked in and off we went touring in Luhat’s boat. Our friend Sia wasted no time casting his rod for some easy catch but only ikan baung or mystus. Sia had a total of 6 before deciding he had enough fun.
We proceeded to picnic spot on the way back to the lodge. It was basically a fresh water river. Anchoring next to it was Mr Ho’s mobile floating house catering to local tourists. Quite an interesting product innovation I must say. It had a detachable longboat by its side in case clients need to go upstream for fishing.
Next…..Moving on to Long Bulan
