Location : Kecamatan Nanga Pinoh, Kabupaten Melawi, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia.
Although Nanga Pinoh was not in our Gawai loop, we made it our next stop just to check out the place since it is the doorway to Kalimantan Barat tallest waterfall called Nohkan Nayan. No, it was not in our schedule, yet, because that would be another 7 day journey.

Nanga Pinoh may be only 74km away from Sintang but the drive took us almost 2hrs due largely to the second half of the drive along a very bad road full of craters like in a war zone. We saw an overturned truck on the side of the road, no surprise.

We arrived to observe a bustling town serviced by planes and airconditioned buses to Pontianak. We drove around town to have a visual check of the hotels available, passed the airport and ventured into a village where the road ended. Finally, picked a hotel that was closest to a huge openair foodcourt / Lapangan Alun-alun Melawi.

As the sun was slowly going down we strolled to the nearby river to check out the scene. As usual we sneaked into the ‘rumah terapung’ or ‘jelatong’ in Sarawak and floating house in English.

Made friends with a Dayak family that ran a convenience store and some of his regular customers who came for his ‘arak’.

After enjoying the sunset from his floating store we had a nice chat in Hakka with the Dayak boss and his daughters. Her eldest daughter Siau Lin invited us to explore the picnic spot at Sungai Pinoh for the following day. To be continued….
