Location : Dusun Matalunai, Desa Beringin Jaya, Kecamatan Putussibau Selatan, Kabupaten Kapuas Hulu, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia.
We continued our boat ride from Nanga Balang for another hour before arriving at our destination Matalunai a Dayak Bukat (pronounced somewhat like ‘bookurt’) village.

Interestingly, the same tribe in Sarawak is called differently as Ukit. Their resettled longhouses can be found in Sungai Asap, Bakun which was where we first met them in 2017.
When we enquired from Ngajang on why the discrepancy of Ukit and Bukat came about, he admitted it was the Sarawak side’s error. He could not explain why. He promised to take steps to amend their name from Ukit to Bukat.

Blood relation is still pretty strong across the border and they occasionally visit each other to maintain tribal ties. We consider ourselves lucky to be part of one of such visits, thanks to Ngajang’s invitation.
For the next few days, Matalunai was our base camp and we would explore the other villages up river. Next….. Sungai Opea
