Location : Kota Sanggau, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia.
Don’t we all like surprises when we visit a place for the first time? We found one right in the middle of a town called Sanggau in Kalimantan Barat. We drove in early July from Kuching to Sanggau to attend its rice harvest festival and we were slowly cruising towards the hotel we intended to stay when suddenly this structure hit us like a bolt of lightning.
The magnificent Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus stood right before our very eyes in all its splendor. The geometric design was what made it so outstanding like some giant teepees and some smaller ones bundled nicely together. An architectural marvel indeed and especially more so in a little place like Sanggau. Possibly a design inspired by some old Western movies of Red Indians and cowboys.
I wasted no time in launching my drone into action. The exterior of the Cathedral was almost completed except for the landscape. The generous inclusion of Dayak motifs and totem poles is what makes Kalimantan churches so uniquely beautiful. Work was still going on inside when we visited but mostly done. We hope to come back someday again to visit.
