Location : Mahua Waterfall, Tambunan District, Interior Division, Sabah, Malaysia.
As we departed Tambunan to return to Kota Kinabalu we decided to swing by to the Tambunan-Ranau road to visit Mahua Waterfall, one of the major attractions along the Crocker Range Park. With all the signages leading to the fall, it was easy to locate for first timers like us. Honestly, there was nothing to shout about this waterfall which was just a mere 10m high or maybe less but the facilities here is just top class and highly recommended for family outing.

When we arrived at the park the cleanliness was too glaring to go unnoticed and the landscape neatly groomed. Paid RM3/pax(!!) for the entrance and made our way along a concrete paved trail to the waterfall.
The 15min trail was well shaded by primary jungle with a generous number of gazebos provided right up to the waterfall area. Another great tourism product innovated by super efficient Sabah Parks.
Sarawak Forestry Corporation could learn a few tricks from Sabah Parks instead of waiting for miracles to happen. Mahua waterfall would have been considered mediocre without the value add ons by Sabah Parks especially the awesome cafeteria although serving simple meals. Lodges and camping ground are available for those interested in staying over.

Sabah maybe blessed with many natural touristic resources but without the government/private sector’s combined determination to push them into commercially viable products, Sabah’s booming tourism would not be where it is today. Neighbour Sarawak pales in comparison as far as tangible product development is concerned. Tourism is basically about selling tourism products, the fewer the products the lower the sales.
Anyway, other nearby attractions of Tambunan are Gunung Alab, Kipandi Butterfly Park and Rafflesia Information Centre all very worthy of visits and within 2hrs drive from Kota Kinabalu. The drive and mountainous sceneries is probably the best in Sabah if not in Malaysia.
