After touring the karst territory of Cantung we headed back towards the direction of Batu Licin as our driver Oyonk knew of only one route to Loksado via Batu Licin.

On hind sight and after going through Google Earth I do believe that we need not drive back to Batu Licin in order to use Codeko Road to go to Loksado. There could be another easier route from Cantung direct to Loksado and that would have save us quite a bit of time and petrol. But then again whether that shorter route was passable or not on that particular day was another question. A policeman we met during lunch advised us to be cautious on the narrow road as there were a lot of landslides along the way due to the rainy season. He was very right. Paid for his lunch and off we went.

Oyonk had never done this ‘back door way’ to Loksado so we had to stop and asked for directions many times along the way. The initial stage of the journey was painfully slow. Muddy dirt road destroyed by coal carrying trucks. 4X4 junkies would have loved this stretch though.
Our rented Innova was holding pretty well for the first 3 hours until its back wheel elbow came off. Luckily, a workshop was only 100m away. While the mechanic was busy fixing the car we passed the time admiring his collection of birds.
We made a couple more stops along the way and the last 2.5 hr drive was done in total darkness. Although the route was less than a 100km long it took us almost 9 hours. By the time we managed to locate Alya Homestay in Loksado it was 8.30pm. Food was scarce at that hour so we had to settle for instant noodle ‘Indo Mie’ at a nearby shop which was closing. Managed somehow to make the lady boss cooked for us. Zero activities here at night so early to bed. Long day with many moments of anxiety but it was fun and a memorable journey. The scenic drive was worth the 8 hours spent. Next, ‘Wet wet morning in Loksado’
