Location : Old Bintulu Airport, Bintlulu Town, Bintulu Division, Sarawak, Malaysia.
The second day event began at 8am with the street parade starting from the Hotel Plaza to the venue. There were more participating countries than we had anticipated.
The air was calm for most part of the morning. By noon, the wind of change that all the flyers were looking for finally came, the long awaited south westerly wind. It was promisingly strong and soon the sky was sprinkled with all sorts of colour and shape. What a sight to behold. However, the most disappointed team of the day must have been the Taiwanese who came with 3 giant whales and was intending to do a triple train but struggled all day. Although they did rise to 20m, their joy was momentary. They soon came crashing down. I wondered if it was due to aerodynamic issues, wind speed or an undersized pilot kite as these giants must have been quite a load to lift. Even when they decided to do a single whale that failed too. Felt sorry for them. Those blue whales could have been so impressive and the waiting Bintulu crowd would have been so pleased. Resting at one of the canopies we were able to meet frequent flyer and founder of the LayangKing ShowKite, Mr Nasri Ahmad of Shah Alam. Most of us would be very upset if we were told ‘to go fly a kite’ but for this jovial personality Mr Nasri, he would be so happy to be told to do so. Kite flying is his love, life and the platform for his globetrotting lifestyle. By the look of the international show kite calendar, Mr Nasri would be on a perpetual world tour. Living up to his name, The Layang King! We thanked him for the invaluable information he shared on the ins and outs of kite flying and the ups and downs of a ‘professional’ kite flyer.
While some flyers might get free holidays from sponsorships, 2 flyers from China and New Zealand who were also big time kite producers participated to get business through the orders they received from fellow flyers. How nice to mix fun and business! Come, let us go fly a kite.
