Location : Desa Tumbang Malahoi, Kecamatan Rungan, Kabupaten Gunung Mas, Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia.
Although the last couple of days in Palangka Raya was fulfilling, fun and beyond expectation, I needed to see the interior of Kalteng to make my trip complete. Agus my host suggested that we visited Betang Toyoi in Tumbang Malahoi, Gunung Mas Regency. Betang means longhouse and Tumbang is tributary of a river just like the ‘Long’ of Sarawak, e.g. Long Lama or Long San. The motorbike ride took us 7hrs to reach Rumah Betang Toyoi, our homestay. The final part of the journey which was supposed to be a shortcut, was very challenging. Slippery deep trenches sometimes filled with water were testing our riding skills. We passed some and failed some. Luckily, the weather was fine and for most parts of the journey, the ride was comfortable with nice sceneries of the landscape as we headed north. Traffic was minimal.

At some point during the ride we stopped by at a local market where we bought some varieties of greens for our overnight stay in Malahoi.

It was late afternoon when we arrived and immediately checked into our homestay at Toyoi longhouse. Bony our host and his family received us as we stepped in and showed us to our room.

Had a nice cold shower and tea before we did a tour of the village.

Lots of sandungs with our guide Agus going into more details about the varitions, coloured and designed according to the types of death.
Dinner was very well taken of by Bony’s mom.

Much appreciated by our hungry stomachs. No further activities were available here in this quiet village. Early to bed early to rise…for the 11hr return journey the following day via a different route. Shudder.
