This brown wild mango botanically known as mangifera pajang kostermans. Mangifera pajang is a species of plant in the Anacardiaceae family. It is found only in Borneo. It is a seasonal fruit starts fruiting twice a year during the months of Jan-Feb and July to August.
To the Malays of Sarawak, this brown wild mango, is called ‘asam embang/ buah embawang’. The Ibans of Sarawak call it ‘buah mawang’. In Sabah, it is known as ‘bambangan’.


This wild mango is a big brown fruit like the size of a canon ball weighing more than 800gm. The tree which is usually of height 30-60m. Its flesh is extremely fibrous and yellowish orange in color. It tastes a little sweet when ripe but sour if under ripe. It is great for making juice and mango jam. It can be kept for a week because of its thick skin.
