Location : Along Rajang River & Sibu Town, Sarawak, Malaysia.
Journey started at 7.30am and arrived at 2pm. A lot faster than the days of Pulau Kidjang and Rajah Mas 4 decades ago where going to Sibu was an overnight trip. Ticket priced at RM45 makes it the cheapest form of transport. Although the sky was hazy the ride was quite fun, a big change of scenery from the usual land trip and when you get sleepy from the breeze on the open upper deck just pop back into the aircondition room for a nap or watch video.

2 stops were made before Sibu, at Tanjung Manis (industrial park) and Sarikei where in the good ole days the famous Sarawak pineapple were freshly skinned and sold at the wharf for only ten cents. As a kid that was something quite exciting to look forward to. 7 of us volunteers took the boat, 4 by land, 2 dentists flew in from Kuching while Charlie flew in from Miri. 2 other dentists were waiting for our arrival in Kapit where they were posted. Slept over at the Sibu Sai Baba Centre and left for Kapit the next morning at 7.30am.

Another 3hour ride upstream along the longest river in Malaysia and third longest in Borneo after Mahakam and Kapuas in Kalimantan. While locals may be immuned to what goes on on both sides of the Rajang river, to the ‘greenies’ the ride is as bad as a horror movie. What else? Its the sawmills and the logs, just too many. I wonder how it can be called sustainable logging which our politicians always claimed.
