Location : Betong Town, Betong Division, Sarawak, Malaysia.
On the third day of our stay in Ulu Layar we had to drive Desmond’s in laws to do some errands in Betong town which was about 20 minutes drive away. While waiting for them to finish shopping we went for a tour of the town. Piles of durians at the 5foot way of a shop attracted our attention. Talked to the silver hair and beard guy in charge and soon found out he was Mr Sie, a retired Teochew trader but he prefered us to call him by his nickname ‘Panang’. He was not modest when he said everyone in and around Betong knew him. Very true. We tried the durian isu and pakan he was selling. YummyX3!.

Panang was standing in for his brother in law Mr Yong who owned a fruit orchard. He patiently waited for 15 years for the pakan durian to bear fruit for the very first time. We were lucky to be able to benefit from his first harvest.

After the durians Mr Yong invited us to the back of his shop for more rambutans and dabai-FOC!

That was when we discovered he had quite a collection of antiques. Cannons. jars, gongs and parangs.

As if sensing we did not have enough, Panang invited us to his house about 5 minutes away to show us his giant mangoes. He absolutely shocked us when he said he had grapes in his garden and an apple tree although barren.

We had so much and so many types of fruits all in one hour. This should make up for the disastrous Bukit Sadok outing. We thanked Panang, Mr & Mrs Yong for their generousity.
