Thanks to Suzanne our friend for inviting us to visit her grandparents’ coconut plantation.
The copra industry which has seen better days is still on going but at snail pace.
But what else can 2 eighty year olds do after so many decades in this dying industry. Most of the surrounding plantations have been sold to investors who have no interest in the industry. Her 2 uncles are still running the business. Other than coconut trees, other fruit trees and vegetables do not do very well on this over exploited land. Acidity must have reached saturation point by now. Unless some innovative agricultural technologies intervene farmers here are not going to see better days ahead.
