Location : Kota Palangka Raya, Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia.
Coming back from Danau Lais we managed to squeeze in for the river cruise @ Rp100K per pax. For smaller boats you could get it for much cheaper. With Kornelius’ good connections, he managed to talk the manager into allowing us to join a private party occupying the lower deck while we had the best view at the upper deck. The cruise provided another dimension in understanding the way of life here in Palangkaraya. It may not be the best but that’s the way it is and we just have to accepted it as of now. Pollutants of all kinds can be seen on both sides of the river banks, exposed more prominently by the dry season. Part and parcel of water villages. Must do activity.

After the 3 hour cruise Kornelius our guide invited us to his house to show off his culinary skill. Besides enjoying his wonderful Ngaju vegetarian dishes we got to meet his beautiful young wife and his 3/4 golden retriever called Goddie. After dinner much time was spent on online booking of our air tickets for return trip to Kuching. Decided on the best loop of P.Raya-Jakarta-Johore Baru-Kuching.

After that was settled, Kornelius insisted we tried a drink called ‘baram’ at a very famous cafe called Rumah Tjilik Riwut named after the very first pilot of the Ngaju tribe who was responsible for making Kalimantan Tengah joined Indonesia which was under the reign of President Soekarno then. Before we forget to tell you, baram is a cocktail of tuak or rice wine with calamansi juice. While the cocktail maybe average, the cafe walls were impressively decorated with Mr Tjilik Riwut life history and his personal collection of pilot uniforms, photos, awards and memorabilia. Well worth a visit.
