Location : Dusun Sungkung Senebeh & Kapot, Desa Sungkung I, Kecamatan Siding, Kabupaten Bengkayang, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia.
Every good thing must come to an end. It’s time to pack, kiss Sungkung goodbye and walk the way we came in……shudder! My knees went weak just thinking about the journey. The compulsory last dance at baruk was done with, gifts changed hands and all set to hit the trail.

The villagers numbering more than 60 walked and helped with the backpacks accompanying us for an hour till we reached the top of the hill.

There we had the last toast with tuak going round and round. Some local ladies took the farewell emotionally, sobbing as they wished Gumbang folks a safe journey. They knew it will be a long time before the next visit at such a grand level.

Trekking from Senebeh to Kapot

We arrived at Kapot in heavy rain and quickly checked into Tok, our host’s house. Thanks to Kabar’s good connections we were well taken care of. Hot dinner was immediately served by Helena, Tok’s sister. That evening we gathered at some place in the village where the closing of Gawai was announced and held. Kapot intentionally made the closing Gawai to coincide with our arrival so as to entertain us during our stay. Such kind hearted people.

Kumbi announced the request for Kapot to provide boat transportation to Kampung Padang so as to bypass the killer trail which we took on the first day. Kapot kindly obliged, thank God! In return Jipep announced and handed over cash donation to Kapot as a gesture of appreciation.

I like how Bidayuh’s style of transaction without making things look too businesslike. They won’t ask for payments but you must be psychic enough to make monetary contributions in return for whatever favour rendered. When the officials matters were done with, loud dangdut music started to fill the cool evening air after the heavy downpour earlier. But we were so damn tired by then. We apologised and had to call it a day. Next day, our journey continued by boat to Kampung Padang.
