Location : Dusun Sungkung Kadok, Akit, Senoleng & Batu Ampar, Desa Sungkung I, II & III, Kecamatan Siding, Kabupaten Bengkayang, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia.
I wish we had more time here in Sungkung so I could learn more about the people and the place. With only one full day here in Senebeh I had no choice but interrupt my coverage of the Gawai ceremony and ventured by bike to Batu Ampar, the farthest of the Sungkung village. Judas my host helped organise the ojek and after getting the blessing of Pak Dawen off we went. We had to hurry in case rain came but I thought it was not likely in June. Marius my ojek was more stressed by that than me as he had seen worse days on these dirt trails.

Sungkung Kadok
The stretch before Kadok was real bad even without the rain, mostly soggy or too steep to risk with a pillion driver. I had to alight many times and sometimes to help push the bike up steep slopes.

Sungkung Akit
Kadok to Akit was pretty good. Akit is situated very high up on the slope enjoying a good view of Penrissen Range.

On the way to Senoleng from Akit
Ride from Akit to Senoleng was good too and we stopped a couple of times for some breath taking views and shots of the valley and the opposite side of the canyon.
Sungkung Senoleng
Senoleng is the only village with an airfield to service Twin Otter flights from Singkawang. This makes it the easiest route to Sungkung but weather dependant and limited seats availability.

Sungkung Batu Ampar
Just as we arrived at the village of Batu Ampar, a healing ceremony was about to begin. Such luck. Got permission from the shaman and started shooting him at work. 3 bowls of different sizes provided the percussion as the dukun performed the healing.

Next, off to the iconic St Fransiskus Church built on a big flat piece of rock and the century year old Baruk.

Wished we had the time to also visit the Chinese family that has been residing here since their great grand parents. Oh well, I’m sure I’ll be back here again someday. Perhaps through the back door of Sapit-Gun Tembawang -Badat.
