Location : Dusun Suruh Engkadok, Desa Pala Pasang, Kecamatan Entikong, Kabupaten Sanggau, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia.

It’s Gawai time again and another visit by Kampung Sadir’s villagers (1 truckload +3 cars) to their Indonesian brothers In Engkadok which lies along the Sekayam River. It has been 18 months since the last reciprocal visit here in 2012. This time the water level in Sekayam is slightly lower, exposing rocks we never saw, making the boat ride even more exciting. Luckily, we didn’t have to get out to push the boat.
Besides the 30 odd from Sadir’s group we were joined by hundreds more from Medan, Pontianak and Sanggau who were guests of Pak Sutek the brother of Pak Sani our host. The so called ‘jetty’ at Entikong were bustling with anxiously waiting guests, most of them first timers.

Along Sekayam River

This year the event was not held at the village hall but instead a much bigger and temporary shed was constructed by Pak Sani just outside his house. We arrived at about 2.30pm after the 3 hour boat ride. Gun shots signaled the start of the welcoming ceremony. Arack and tuak flowed as guests slowly walked up the cement stairs lined by Engkadok villagers dressed in traditional clothings.

Guests proceeded to the new hall accompanied by traditional gong music and dancing.

The night began.. To make the 2 night event more interesting Pak Sutek engaged 5 singers from Pontianak to entertain the dancing crowd. Sadir folks are party animals! Guests couldn’t wait to fill up the dance floor. All night long and till the cock crows. Fun fun fun…..happy for them. (Check out Day 2 here)
