Chinese New Year (31st Jan 2014)

Celebrated by Brunei’s large Chinese community, this festival lasts for two weeks.
It begins with a family reunion dinner on the eve of the Lunar New Year.
For the next two weeks, families visit one another bringing with them oranges to
symbolize longevity and good fortune. Traditional cookies and food are sold
throughout cities and towns during this festivity. Unmarried young people and
children will receive angpow or little red packets with money inside, a symbolic
gesture to ensure good luck, wealth and health for the coming year.


Negara Brunei Darulssalam 30th National Day (23rd Feb 2014)

This year Brunei Darussalam is celebrating it's 30th National Day and the whole 
country is buzzing with excitement. Highlights of the day will be the spectacular
parade by all government bodies, non-governmental organisations, private sectors,
school and colleges. The theme for this year celebration is "Negaraku Brunei 
On the eve of the National Day (22nd February 2014) a mass Maghrib prayer and 
Doa Kesyukuran (thanksgiving prayer) will be held in various major mosques 
in the country.

His Majesty the Sultan’s Birthday (15th Jul 2014)

This is one of the most important events in the national calendar, with activities
and festivities held nationwide, beginning with a mass prayer throughout the 
country. On this occasion, His Majesty the Sultan delivers a royal address, followed
by an inauguration ceremony held at the Istana Nurul Iman palace. The event is also 
marked with gatherings at the four districts where His Majesty meets with his subjects.

UBD FRESHERS’ WEEK JULY 2014/2015 (20th-26th Jul 2014)

Hari Raya Aidilfitri (28th-29th Jul 2014)

Hari Raya is a time for three days of celebration after the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.
On the first day, prayers are held at mosques throughout the country. Families gather to seek forgiveness
from elders and loved ones, adorned in traditional dress. Special festive dishes are made especially for
Hari Raya, including satay (beef, chicken or mutton kebabs), ketupat or lontong (rice cakes in coconut
or banana leaves), rendang (spicy marinated beef) and other tantalizing examples of national cuisine.
It is on this auspicious occasion that Istana Nurul Iman is open to the public. This provides the public
and other visitors with the opportunity to meet His Majesty and the Royal Family and see the world’s
largest residential palace.

Festival of Sacrifice / Hari Raya Aidiladha (5th Oct 2014)

Venue : Jame' 'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, Kiulap
This is also known as Hari Raya Korban or Hari Raya Aidiladha. Goats and cows are sacrificed to
commemorate the actions of the Islamic Prophet Ibrahim. The meat is then distributed among relatives,
friends and the less fortunate.

This day marks the beginning of the year for the Islamic calendar, which is based on lunar cycles.
Because it is slightly shorter than the Gregorian calendar year, it is possible for the Islamic New Year

Temburong Bisai Festival (30th Nov-20th Dec 2014)

Venue : Temburong District
Temburong, a well known district for its natural treasures has been actively promoting its annual
events since 2007. Held during the 4th term school holidays, this 3 week long event attracts
people from all walks of life including foreign visitors.
Various competitions and activites are organised such as cultural performances,  fishing challenge,
tug of war, remote control boat, photographic and even half marathon. It is also an opportunity for
the locals to boost their income by showcasing their products.
