Location : Kampung Serasot, Bau, Kuching Division, Sarawak, Malaysia.
Thanks to our ever helpful friend Reagan who tried his very best to organize our visit to Kampung Serasot near Bau for this probably last ever Gawai to be performed in the traditional way complete with the priests and priestesses. It was unfortunate that one of the priests who happened to be Reagan’s grandfather passed away suddenly on the first day of the ritual. We arrived late afternoon on the second day with nothing much happening as the main event of this Gawai was scheduled on the early morning (2am) the following day.
Since there was no accommodation available here on that very day we had no choice but to put up the night at the jungle resort in Kampung Tringgus which was about 20min drive away.
Although we made it on time the next morning with much excitement, we were told the trance and the receiving of the new paddy was just over. Such a big disappointment for the four of us. Reagan had been trying so hard to contact and inform us of the earlier than expected schedule but unfortunately the phone connectivity was very poor in this region. Oh well, after all, we humans cannot determine when the gods and in this case the ‘Kamangs’ from the mountains will enter the bodies of the priests and priestesses to manifest new seeds for the new season. Not our luck this time but we wish them another golden harvest for next year nonetheless. The night ended with the rejoicing dance around the altar.
