Location : Kampung Kiding & Sapit, Padawan District, Kuching Division, Sarawak, Malaysia.
We organised this private trip specially for Mr Ng an adventure operator/guide from Kuala Lumpur. With the intention of marketing it to the world of course. The drive to the trailhead got me quite confused with the ongoing construction of the new road. Overshot and landed in Kampung Parang instead. Must have wasted an hour trying to get back on track. Lack of trekking the last couple of months had me puffing all the way up the 7km trail. After the heavy dose of durians I chosed to stay back while Ng and Siyut headed for Gareg Fall. After dinner Bakas, Ng and I had a very fruitful brainstorming session on how to improve the tour package for Ng’s future clients. Impressive ideas generated. Really looking forward to implement these ideas for Ng’s clients.
Kampung Kiding
At 12 noon the next day we started to trek towards Kampung Sapit. A new trail which I had always wanted to recce but put off for more than half a year. This trail started on pretty flat terrain with fruits like durian and apple manggo strewned across the jungle path. As we got farther from the farming area life started to get difficult with overgrown grass or completely covered trails. Some spots were blocked by fallen trees or bamboos. Much time was wasted in clearing all these.
What was supposed to be a 2 hour trek took us 4 hours. We passed through areas named Bakut, Ari, Manggu, Bisah & New Testament Church (NTC) or otherwise called ‘Border Peg 144‘. Interesting for outsiders like me to learned that even in this clueless jungle the locals have names for specific areas. It was such a relieve to arrive at NTC after a torturing jungle workout. A very friendly couple Mr & Mrs Jefferson was there to receive us and kindly offered us farm fresh organic fruits and drinks.
We could have stayed longer than the 30 minutes we were there. This church and retreat is too beautiful to miss out. Reluctantly, we bade our farewell to the Jeffersons as our Sapit friends had been waiting for our arrival since 2 hours ago! My cellphone had been ringing mad. Half an hour more to go. Very steep steps on the way to Kampung Sapit.
