Sebujit Lama (Old Village of Sebujit), Siding, Kalimantan Barat Indonesia

First & foremost we would like to thank Pak Gunawan the eldest son of the Ketua Adat of Dusun Sebujit Pak Amin for granting us our request to help organize our side trip to Sebujit Lama to see with our own eyes the spectacular, the one and only century old Baruk standing tall on Mount Sasig. Probably the oldest baruk and grandest icon of the Bidayuh tribe of Borneo. I knew for a fact that during the village meeting the night before our departure, Pak Gunawan did put in a strong proposal that we be granted our wish. Terima Kasih Sebujit.

The trip had to be done on our second day morning here as everyone would be too busy from that afternoon onwards receiving guests. So by 7am that morning we were all set to hop onto the 3 bikes of Gunawan’s 2 brothers Danus and Samurai and Mei Krebo the adventure guy from Java. The ride along the slippery dirt road must have been 30 min before we passed the 2 villages of Butut and Iyang. From the foothill village of Iyang onwards, the ascending trail was very narrow and wet. You would need a good ojek to be able to do it safely. Otherwise, get down and walk. From Dusun Iyang to where we parked our bikes must have been 15min.

Trekking started quite steeply at some point which reminded us of Kampung Semban but the trail was far more cooler and scenic with misty views of Siding, Gunung Anggas, Kampung Tringgus and Kampung Padang Pan to the left.

Giant trees are still being spared here. Nice rest stops lined the trail making us rest longer than we should. Besides, the breath taking sceneries were too captivating which not many hiking trails can offer these days. Such a privilege and honour to be able to hike on this century old trail.

After more than an hour we arrived at the rocky path leading to this ancient village, the original Sebujit.

Although abandoned by many for lower ground, 20 families were still holding the fort to make sure history stayed alive. The village was very quiet as most of them had already trekked down to the new village for the nyobeng celebration. Lots of free ranch pigs running around which explained all the barren brown earth around this village.

The first thing our eager eyes searched for was the magnificent baruk or skull house. Given to understand it had a replica somewhere in Jakarta. We wasted no time snapping it with our cameras like it was a celebrity.

Old Sebujit’s Baruk

Stopped to have our packed brunch at one of the villager’s house before we continued touring the village. Ginger tuak seemed very popular among these Indonesian villagers. But we preferred the freshly harvested ijuk tuak or palm wine which was in abundance here. Something many city folks would die for.

Time to say goodbye to Sebujit Lama as Danus had to hurry back to Sebujit Baru to get ready to receive the Kampung Padang Pan guests who hiked in from Kampung Gumbang.
