Introduction :
Fairy Cave (also known as Gua Pari) is an impressive limestone show cave. It is a remnants of fortress built by the Japanese army during its occupation of the state in 1941. Japanese Army built this fortress to defend themselves from enemy attacks but later abandoned them after the war. Although much smaller than the those in Niah and Mulu, the Fairy Cave does have its own charms and uniqueness, and it is still quite huge. Access to the cave is via a four storey concrete staircase which brings you to the cave entrance.
You pass through a dim, narrow passage and up some steep wooden steps. It is fairly dark. The cave is criss-crossed with concrete footpaths and steps and it is best to stick to the paths for safety and to avoid damaging the fragile eco-system. You will be able to see some unusual stalactites and stalagmites that were formed over thousands of years ago. Many Buddhist and Taoist come here to burn joss sticks as many of the formations are similar to their deities. From the opening high up above the cave floor you can get a good view of the surrounding fields and forested hills. The rock surface outside the cave has attracted numerous rock climbers annually. It became the centre of attraction of thousands coming in for the “Rock On 2-International Rock Climbing Festival”.
