Location : Dusun Sungkung Senebeh, Desa Sungkung I, Kecamatan Siding, Kabupaten Bengkayang, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia.
The opening ceremony started in the morning with Senebeh’s headman Pak Dawen welcoming guests/visitors and the pinning of corsages.
Speeches by VIP guests
6 speeches were delivered from both sides of the border. Kumbi the deputy headman from Gumbang delivered KK Atok’s speech on his behalf encouraging all Bidayuh youths to strive harder and not let failure discourage them in life.
Penghulu Jakius’s speech
Penghulu Jakius explained the term ‘Bidayuh’ as meaning ‘ people who live far away from the sea’ and went back in history to describe how 6 siblings(4 boys 2 girls) of their tribe were spread over Borneo with 4 in Sarawak (Singai, Bung Jagoi, Padawan and Tebedu) and the other two in Sungkung Indonesia. That was where the 6 siblings propagated the Bidayuh race from there on. Interesting story.
YB Egarius’s speech
YB Egarius was probably the most powerful, warning all Christian evangelists not to be too fanatical in their preachings by degrading or discouraging the Bidayuh traditional practice. He compromised that Christianity can go hand in hand with their ancestral way of life and the skulls and Baruk are the symbols of their culture which must be preserved. I can’t agree more.
Before all these speeches ended I had organised an ojek for my tour to Sungkung Batu Ampar while Mei Er took care of business in Senebeh. More photos of Kadok, Akit, Senoleng and Batu Ampar coming soon.
